Planning Your Family’s Winter San Diego Getaway
Let’s face it — winters can be long, harsh and cold in many parts of the country. When the seasonal doldrums set in, anyone would be forgiven for wanting to plan a warm-weather escape. So if you’re hoping to enjoy some sunnier weather this winter, here are some great reasons to plan a family San Diego getaway.
No Winter Weather
San Diego’s famously mild year-round weather means that we simply don’t experience winter the same way many other parts of the country do. Our average daytime temperature during the traditionally coldest months of the year rarely dips below the mid-60°F range, and can climb up to the upper 70°F territory when the sun is high. So if you’d like to trade snow shoveling, icy roads and chilled air for sun, sand, and surf, San Diego is ready to welcome you.
Peak Whale-Watching Season
San Diego’s West Coast location means that we’re in a prime spot for whale-watching during peak migration. Every year, schools of gray whales (totalling upwards of 20,000 animals) make their way from the warmer waters of the southern hemisphere north for spring mating season. Several local boating companies offer spotting tours designed to get you close enough to see these majestic creatures. Check out our blog post on whale-watching in San Diego to learn more!
SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration (5 miles away)
SeaWorld San Diego has thrilled generations of marine life enthusiasts for nearly six decades. The park truly comes alive during the holidays, however. The SeaWorld Christmas Celebration takes place from November 12 – January 2 this season, and features a host of holiday-themed shows, events, gifts, souvenirs and other surprises. Guests are invited to sip cozy cups of hot cocoa as they visit all of their favorite animals throughout the decorated grounds.

50th Annual Bay Parade of Lights
One of the city’s most cherished holiday traditions marks its 50th year in 2021. The Bay Parade of Lights will see dozens of watercraft proudly cruising San Diego Bay, each decked out with festive lights and holiday decorations. This year’s theme is “The 12 Days of Christmas,” and will feature scores of participants. You and your family will want to find your way to the water to get an eyeful of all the seafaring splendor come nightfall on December 12 and 19. The Parade of Lights actually kicks off on Shelter Island, right in front of our hotel — making us the perfect spot to grab a drink and watch it begin.

Holiday Celebrations at LEGOLand California (34 miles away)
The San Diego area’s LEGOLand California won’t be outdone when it comes to celebrating the season. The whole park has gotten a magical makeover, with several holiday-themed characters making a return appearance. The bigger and better than ever 30-foot tree (made entirely of LEGO bricks, including more than 400 ornaments) will be twinkling, too. Of course, Santa will be on-hand for photos and fun as well. ‘Tis truly the season for LEGOLand holiday fun.
