A quiet place to enjoy the first hints of spring, Shelter Island is marked by tranquil skyline, bike routes, and very little of the noise that’s found in other parts of the city. It may not boast the bustling excitement of Mission Beach or the Gaslamp Quarter, but sometimes peace and quiet is what you really need. Bike Rides
One of the most popular activities for a reason, the addition of cycling has proved to be a major benefit for visitors looking to get some physical activity while sightseeing. Whether you want to go farther out into Point Loma or are just looking for a short spin around Shelter Island, you can look forward to a pleasant ride.
Fishing
If you and your family love the calm of fishing, Shelter Island has just the place for you. The Shelter Island Pier is a scenic point to take in the views and cast lines for a variety of species, including bonito, barracuda, calico bass, halibut and more. The Pier is open from 6 AM-10:30 PM, and no fees are required.
Playground
A great option for families with kids, this is also totally free. There are several slides, a swing set, and a climbing structure, plus the views of the water. Take it easy while the kids play, and don’t forget to bring your sunscreen.
Boat Watching
We are, after all, home to one of San Diego’s top marinas! As the point of departure for many short and long-range sportfishing trips, plus the constant presence of cruise liners, you’ll have a lot of maritime activity to watch on the horizon.
Public Art
Clustered at the south end of the island, you’ll find several beautiful and moving works of art, including the Yokohama Friendship Bell (gifted to the city in 1958), the Tunaman’s Memorial, and the Pacific Rim Park mosaic. Learn about their history and enjoy your journey.
