Fishing on Shelter Island
The Best Places to Cast Your Line
Shelter Island is the prime location for fisherman of all sorts - from master anglers to casual first time fishers, read on below to discover our favorite places around the area to cast your line - be it by boat or by pier.
Shelter Island Pier
About a 5 minute walk from the Best Western PLUS Island Palms Hotel & Marina lies the ever-popular Shelter Island Pier. Extending 200 feet from the shore, Shelter Island Pier has enough room for anyone to set up shop for a day of fishing. You'll find the usual San Diego Bay creatures lurking below the surface including; spotted bay bass, calico bass, barred sand bass, halibut, bat rays, mackerel, leopard sharks, bonito, croaker, shovelnose guitarfish, and barracuda. The pier is open daily from 6 am to 10:30 pm ensuring that you'll have plenty of time to reel in your catch of the day.
Point Loma Sportfishing
If hitting the open water and tackling (get it?) the creatures at bay is more your jam, then check out Point Loma Sportfishing, located less than 5 minutes away driving from the hotel and about a leisurely 20 minute stroll. Featuring fishing excursions that are local and last half a day to trips that range from 3 to 7 days and take you all the way out to the Baja Coast - there really is something for every angler at Point Loma Sportfishing.
Pacific Dawn Sportfishing
Located down the street from us, Pacific Dawn Sportfishing is perfect for fishing charters consisting of 1 to 2 and a half days. Featuring an air conditioned bunk room, refinished galley, color scanning sonar, new custom bait tanks and more - the Pacific Dawn is one of our top choices for shorter excursions.
