Point Loma
A Seaside Community
Our own neighborhood of Shelter Island lies right off the beautiful Point Loma peninsula - otherwise known as "where San Diego began". This charming seaside community is home to plenty of history, popular eateries, welcoming watering holes, outdoor activities, and shopping. If you ever get a chance to visit, in addition to staying at the Best Western PLUS Island Palms Hotel & Marina, be sure to check out the wonderful Point Loma neighborhood and discover something new.
Things To Do
Liberty Station
Located just down the road from us, Liberty Station has really transformed over the last few years. Growing from a Naval Training Center into a blossoming arts district, public market, shopping center, small concert venue, and so much more. It really is possible to spend the entire day at Liberty Station - there's so much to do and see. Our favorite Liberty Station happening would have to be First Friday: patrons are welcome to explore the art galleries among the promenade and stay for the free concert put on by local musicians. You can learn more about First Friday.
Cabrillo National Monument
At the tip of the Point Loma peninsula lies Cabrillo National Monument, a commemoration to the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Visitors are welcome to peruse the park and discover the Point Loma tidepools, Point Loma Lighthouse, daily auditorium programs and ranger talks, and the history behind the park.
Sailing
Point Loma boasts an extremely nautical lifestyle for locals and visitors alike. Dive in and charter a sailboat for an exquisite afternoon on the bay. Sail San Diego is a reputable company that offers a variety of sailing tours as well as whale watching. Don't forget to wave 'hello' to us as your cruise on by Shelter Island. Did we mention the beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are always complimentary?
Restaurants
Point Loma Seafoods
Cocktails, and sushi, and sandwiches - oh my! Point Loma Seafoods is every fish connoisseur's one-stop-shop for all things seafood related. They feature a full restaurant menu with the best local catch - ensuring everything is fresh - and they offer fresh fish to buy and take home as well as processing for local anglers.
Brigantine
Since 1969, Brigantine has been a local favorite for all things seafood - their fish tacos in particular are very popular. With 8 locations throughout the county, the thinkers at Brigantine are obviously doing something right. Stop by the original location in Point Loma and see for yourself.
Miguel's Cocina
Delicious Mexican dishes, mouthwatering hand-crafted margaritas and cocktails, all under a warm and inviting roof. Miguel's Cocina is down the street from the Best Western PLUS Island Palms Hotel & Marina and is one of our favorite local Mexican restaurants - which is saying a lot considering San Diego is well-known for having amazing Mexican food! Trying the white queso dip with chips is a must!
